He was Samuel Johnson's cat. Someone was roaming London shooting cats, and Johnson commented on it, then added that his cat wasn't going to be shot. It was unusual at the time for men to keep cats as pets-- as opposed to merely having them for vermin control. Johnson would go to the market himself to buy oysters for Hodge. This statue of Hodge is outside Johnson's former residence and shows him with a pile of oyster shells.
