To the FreshGrass Festival at Mass MoCa over the weekend. Among the cool things at this event is the Friday night commissioned work series. This year the featured artists were Corner House, Sierra Hull, and Jerry Douglas. As is usually the case with this piece following this performance we hustled over to the Merch store to buy CDs. (As Bruce Eaton says, the best way to support the arts is to buy a ticket; to corollary is that buying merch is also good.)
Other notables: Miko Marks, bluegrass informed by soul (I know. I was surprised myself), and Sierra Ferrell. (The CD we bought, her latest, is her mandolin backed up by Ethan Jodziewicz on bass. I'm looking forward to spending more time with it.) Old Crow Medicine Show always puts on a rousing performance, Taj Mahal is a national treasure. Del McCoury is apparently immortal. Tanya Tucker closed things out, old school Nashville, put me in mind of Robert Altman.
